Varsity 2010 (overall record 21 – 3 – 3; SCL record 9 – 1 – 2)

Editor’s note: All the recaps below courtesy of Paul Pastorino, proud papa of Keith and the whole Analy Boys Soccer team.

L – Wed 11/10 – NCS Semi-final – Analy 0 Cardinal Newman 0 (CN 5-4 PKs) recap: Tiger’s season draws to close; Cardinal Newman wins NCS semi-final in PKs. Team’s efforts a season of long-lasting achievement and pride. – On a chilly, West county evening on Karlson Field, your Analy boys varsity soccer team accomplished what few Tiger teams before them have — a berth in the NCS semi-finals. It was fitting they face a generational foe, Cardinal Newman. While the Tiger’s offense put up strong attacks outshooting the Cardinals at least 3 to 1 with shots on goal, tonight’s battle was all about defense. Both regulation halves came and went, as did the overtime period bringing the contest inevitably to be judged by penalty kicks. As almost any soccer veteran will tell you, winning or losing in PKs is never the way you want to go. “A lousy way to win, and a lousy way to lose.” But each side must do either. And while the Tigers came up short by only one kick this evening, we mustn’t forget what everyone associated to this season came up long on: achievement (Final record: 21-3-3), and pride (a group of young men forged a fast and potent team surprising many and winning the SCL co-championship title). Perhaps most important: the bonds created by new friends, perhaps lifelong. The joy of playing a game of beauty — perhaps at their highest organized level — that these boys have prepared for most of their lives. Truly, the winning dwells in the doing: practicing, traveling together, goofing around, playing the game. A final word of thanks to the coaches — Peter Meechan, Jim Olvera and Grant Dubois — for helping sculpt young men from boys. Winners for a lifetime. Forever Tigers. Go Analy! (video below)
W – Sat 11/6 – NCS Second round – Analy 1 Windsor 0 goal: Armando Coronel assist: Agustin Reyes recap: Analy holds off Windsor; Tigers to face Cardinal Newman in NCS semi-finals. After their physical game with Arcata on Saturday, tonight’s quarterfinal match with the Jaguars of Windsor would test the Varsity Soccer Tigers fuel tank. How much was left. Windsor must have wanted this bad, bolstered by the Press Democrat favoring them to win eventhough the Tigers beat and tied them this season to hold the face-to-face edge. At opening whistle, Saturday, your Tigers came out strong and opened up with several shots on goal, though no net. Raffi Dick took a one-on-one, up the middle break-away and brilliantly outmanuvered his defender to get off a sizzler, just wide right of the post. But Windsor responded, stiffened. Halftime 0-0. As the mist and the evening cool began to settle on the pitch, Analy busted out of halftime with a breakaway up the left side by Agustin Reyes, then a looping 30 yard crossing pass in front the box found the head of a surging Armando Coronel. Boom! Analy 1-0 in the first 90 seconds. As the half continued, the Jaguars continued to pressure Analy’s defense. More shots. More corner kicks. Each time Analy’s lights-out defense (Willis, Munger, Pastorino and Zepponi) weakened or pushed back the attacks. Goalie Sebastian Birthelmer did see more work tonite than practically any game this season, but in the end, your Tigers held and earned the right to move on to the semi-finals. NEXT GAME; Wed., Nov. 10th, Cardinal Newman, 7 pm, Karlson Field. COME CHEER ON YOUR TIGERS
W – Wed 11/3 – NCS First round – Analy 4 Arcata 0 goals: Cameron Wehrfritz (PK), Agustin Reyes (2), David Vigil assists: Cameron Wehrfritz, Armando Coronel recap: Tigers win street brawl with Arcata; face Windsor on Saturday - Call it survival of the fittest. Your Analy boy’s varsity soccer team (2 seed) out slugged Arcata (15 seed) in the first round of the post-season North Coast Section CIF tournament winning 4-0 in a game of two completely different halfs. These foes have met twice in the pre-season, both extracting a victory: Analy at the Healdsburg Tournament, and Arcata on their turf in McKinleyville’s invitational, a rare loss for our boys. Both times, tough, physical games. Now, on Karlson Field with everything on the line, Arcata came out hyper aggressive. Body collisions. Shoving. Intimidation. Swayed by the physicality, resisting retaliation, Analy got pushed off its game yet survived and ended the melee half scoreless. Coaches Meechan, Olivera and Dubois came up with the perfect half time adjustment: get back to playing your game, guys. They listened. Your Tigers scored three times in the first 7 minutes of the second half: a penalty kick by Cameron Wehrfritz, a breakaway by Agustin Reyes and a nice close-in goal again by Agustin, with an assist from Cameron Wehrfritz. Analy delivered the knock-out. Arcata tried to rally but remained punchless, literally and figuratively, due to the shut-down defense of Willis, Pastorino, Zepponi and Munger, and steady goal tender, Sebastian Birthelmer. David Vigil added a thing of beauty with goal no. 4, artful assist to Armando Coronel. Your Analy Tigers earn a second round game against Windsor (7 seed) whom they beat at home, and tied at Windsor. GAME TIME: Saturday, Nov. 6th, 7:00 pm, Karlson Field. Come out and cheer your Tigers onto victory!!
W – Tue 10/26 - Analy 2 Sonoma 1 goals: Cameron Wehrfritz (2 PK’s) recap: Tigers vex Sonoma to win 2-1; share SCL championship title – On Karlson Field, their last league game tonight, the Tigers possessed two options. Lose, and place third. Win, and share the SCL Championship with the team they just defeated. Your never-say-die 2010 Varsity put together a full throttle game confounding their opponent by tough defense allowing meager shots on goal. And the Tiger’s lethal, fast-break offense did the rest though not by scoring outright, but threatening Sonoma so many times that speedy Tigers were fouled in the goalie box. Twice. Both times leading to successful penalty kicks (PK) by Cameron Wehrfritz. The first half proved a 40 minute sprint leading to 0-0 tie, and massive, halftime Gatorade consumption. Early in the second, the Tigers earned their first PK, and although their offense stayed quiet for about 20 minutes after, tough “D” made all the difference keeping Sonoma to just two shots on goal. A Tiger was fouled by the goalie on yet another break-away, leading to the deciding second PK goal by Wehrfritz. Though Sonoma finally scored in the last two minutes, Tiger defense kept them at bay to earn the SCL co-championship. With this win, Analy possesses home field advantage for most if not all of their playoff matches. Check back soon for post-season tournament times at Karlson Field. GO TIGERS!! (story at the PD and video below)
T – Thu 10/19 - Analy 3 Healdsburg 3 (OT) goals: Armando Coronel (2), Ryan Willis assist: Eli Munger recap:Tough Tigers tie Healdsburg, 3-3 in OT – at home, after Varsity forward Armando Coronel scored the opening goal (asst from Eli Munger), the Hounds of Healdsburg quickly found the net twice on goals, and once on a penalty kick (PK). With only the first quarter of the game in the books, the Tigers are down 3-1. Analy stiffened to end the half. Roaring out in the second half, Coronel scored on a PK rebound off the goalie and the emboldened Tigers started clawing. With less than 2 minutes remaining, defensive sweeper Ryan Willis playing up nets the tieing goal sending this high energy match into overtime. In OT, Analy shot 5 times on goal to Healdsburg’s zip, but unfortunately one didn’t find the net. Next game: Sonoma, home, Tuesday, 10/26, 7PM.
T – Thu 10/14 - Analy 1 Windsor 1 (OT) goal: Armando Coronel
W – Tue 10/12 - Analy 5 Casa Grande 0 goals: own goal, Agustin Reyes (2 incl PK), Armando Coronel (2) assists: Agustin Reyes, Juan Sanchez recap: Tigers give Casa a whippin’ at home – Looking to avenge their loss at home, Casa Grande came out hard versus Analy at Karlson pitch, initially, but buckled to the still-faster, more talented Tigers. In the first half, shortly after an own-goal, Agustin Reyes drained a PK and the Gauchos were stunned. Then, Armando Coronel put an artful solo effort into the net. Halftime score: 3-0 Tigers. Game over. The second half saw both Armando and Agustin score again. The rest of the Tiger team all got game-time action and played admirably. Next game: Thursday, 10/14 at Windsor, 7PM. (last meeting: Tigers 4, Windsor 0.)
W – Wed 10/6 – Analy 2 Petaluma 1 goals: Raffi Dick, Agustin Reyes (PK in OT) recap: Tigers win overtime squeaker over Petaluma. At Petaluma, the Varsity boy’s soccer team had their hands full with a Trojan’s team set on avenging their early season 4-1 loss at Karlson Field. After a scoreless first half, Petaluma got a gift on a misjudged ball bounce. Motivation kicked in and Raffi Dick scored a scrum-like goal in front of the box and just three minutes left to play. With the score tied one a piece at the end of regulation play, the game went into two, 10 minute overtime periods. The Tigers came out sharp forcing Richie Amador to be fouled in the goalie box early on. Agustin Reyes then buried the penalty kick for what would be the 2-1 final. Record stands at 17-2-1.
W – Tue 10/5 – Analy 4 El Molino 1 goals: Agustin Reyes, Anthony Zepponi, Armando Coronel, David Vigil assists: Agustin Reyes, Armando Coronel
L – Thu 9/30 - Analy 1 Sonoma 2 goals: Juan Sanchez assist: Armando Coronel recap: Boy’s Varsity lose hard fought battle to Sonoma Valley – The two best varsity teams in the SCL went back-and-forth Tuesday afternoon, with the Tigers on the short end by one. Tied at 1-1 at half, Sonoma Valley came out strong in the second half, scored once and played tough “D” the rest of the way. Tiger’s record still stands at an impressive 15-2-1. (5-1 in league play.) Juan Sanchez scored the lone goal, assisted by Armando Coronel. Mark your calendar: Looks like the battle for the top will be between these two teams when they meet at Karlson Field on Tues., Oct. 26.
W – Mon 9/27 - Analy 4 Petaluma 1 goals:Cameron Wehrfritz, Raffi Dick, Armando Coronel, Isaac Moore assist: David Vigil recap: Petaluma falls to Analy 4-1; boy’s varsity soccer team undefeated in league play – On a warm Monday evening at Karlson Field, the boy’s varsity soccer team continued its domination of the SCL with a resounding 4-1 victory over Petaluma improving the team’s overall record to 15-1-1. (5-0 in league play.) The Trojans struggled to keep up with the Tiger’s attacking style and were outmatched in speed and depth at virtually all positions. The Tigers will face perhaps their strongest challenge this Thursday at the Sonoma Valley Dragons home field, Sept.30. Game time will be 4 PM.
W – Thu 9/23 - Analy 2 Healdsburg 1 goals: Richy Amador, Juan Sanchez assist:Armando Coronel
W – Tue 9/21 - Analy 4 Windsor 0 goals: (own goal), Armando Coronel, Agustin Reyes, Cameron Wehrfritz assists: Richy Amador, and ? recap: Windsor bows to Analy’s constant pressure game – The boy’s soccer team’s unending pressure play caught Windsor by surprise, so much so an early mental error caused an own-goal by one of their defenders. Sixty seconds later, the Tigers attacked with a goal by Armando Coronel, and suddenly Windsor is down 2-0. They never recovered. In the second half, Coronel was fouled in the goalie box leading to Reyes’ success penalty kick. The Jaguars turned testy as two Windsor players received red cards in a minor altercation meaning both were ejected. Playing two players down, Analy’s Wehrfritz volleyed the fourth goal of the night deep in the net from 10 yards out on a beautiful crossing pass. Read more at the PD.
W – Thu 9/16 – Analy 3 Casa Grande 1 goals: Armando Coronel (3 – hat trick) assists: Agustin Reyes, Raffi Dick recap: Analy’s superior ball control was the dominating difference as the Tigers never let the Gauchos into the game, keeping the ball on their opponent’s side of the field the majority of the evening. The Gauchos were only able to sneak in a goal in the last 5 seconds of the game. The Tiger defense was never really challenged holding Casa to only 3 shots on goal the entire night.
