THE ANALY HIGH SCHOOL NEWSLETTER MARCH 2008 PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING March begins the testing season with CAHSEE testing for all tenth grade students and some eleventh and twelfth grade students. March CAHSEE dates are Tuesday, March 11 and Wednesday, March 12. April brings us STAR testing as usual. We will have a special schedule for those days. STAR testing will take place April 15-16 and April 22-23. A letter will be mailed home to parents with specific times. These are very important tests and we ask that parents with students in grades 9-11 encourage their student to take these tests. Congratulations to Analy High School senior, Dylan Fried for his selection as one of the top students in Sonoma County Schools. He will be honored by Governor Schwartzenneger on Tuesday, March 11 in Sacramento at the Governor's Academic Awards Dinner. The Centennial plans are in full swing. We hope that you will plan on attending this memorable event on May 17, 2008. For more information about the event, how to purchase tickets etc., please go to www.analy100.org. The evening will culminate with a fireworks show at approximately 9:30 p.m. presented by Pyro Spectaculars. March ends with Spring Break. The dates of Spring Break are: Monday, March 24 - Friday, March 28. School will resume on Monday, March 31 with a regular Monday schedule. Yours in Education, Martin M. Webb Principal ___________________________ Speaking of Speech By Lynette Williamson DEBATE TEAM TAKES DVC BY A STORM (during a storm) It was another dark and stormy weekend in the East Bay and another victorious weekend for the Analy debate team! Sunday, January 27th, 550 Bay Area students competed at the league's third debate tournament at Diablo Valley College. Three of Analy's teams emerged from the tumult with trophies for their winning records: the teams of Jackson Thomas and Truman Coy; Leah Erickson and Sam Jaffe, Michael Millerick and Harrison Noah. Two teams left with even bigger trophies for being UNDEFEATED in league: the teams of Kayley Mattheson and Rosie Mertens and Gordon Allen and Ryan Taylor-Davis. Taking a well-deserved bow and first place in National Extemporaneous speaking was Laura Schumaker. ANALY SPEAKERS CLOSE OUT LIONS' CLUBS Congratulations to the Analy speakers who closed out the Roseland Lions' Club and the Gravenstein's Lion's Club speech contests respectively. Speaking on the topic " Immigration: my solution, " finalists Mike Barela, Gustavo Vasquez, Megan Stafford, and Paul Calley took home cash prizes; while Nina Griffin and Gabe Wheaton took home first place honors and a chance to compete for thousands more in March. SOAKING UP SUN AND SOCKING AWAY TROPHIES AT STANFORD It took three days, three different venues, and four stalwart chaperones, but eventually, the Analy Debate team emerged victorious on the Stanford University campus. In Parliamentary Debate, Autumn Burnes, Riley Daly, and Josh Maas- Howard toted home Octofinalists trophies, making them among the top 8 of the 128 entries at the tournament. In Lincoln Douglas debate, Chris Catterton earned bragging rights and a bid to the Tournament of Champions in Lexington Kentucky in May with his 3rd place finish out of 219 entries in his event. Sam Stafford and Zoe Leverant scored points and trophies for their speaking skills when they each advanced to final rounds in their events. Zoe took home a 4th place trophy in National Extemporaneous speaking, while Sam snagged a third place award in Impromptu and a first place finish in Spontaneous Argumentation. These results were made all the more impressive when we realized there were over 1,000 students from 125 schools in attendance from across the nation. The kids recognize, however, that their victories would not have been possible without the sacrifice and dedication of the chaperones-a standing ovation to Claire Beery, Jan Coulter, Oren Noah, and Vernon Stafford. QUALIFYING SEASON HAS BEGUN! Forget basketball March Madness, with four back-to-back tournaments in March, the madness is here! Check the Analy Debate website for dates and times of both the qualifying tournaments and their coordinated practices. Remember, students entering the qualifiers must be prepared to bring an adult to judge at least one of the tournaments. If you are not on our parent e-mail list, please contact Lynette Williamson: db8coach@hotmail.com. ___________________________ COUNSELORS CORNER Third quarter progress reports have arrived home by now. We hope things are going well for all students. If you need assistance through the Tutorial Center or using weekly tutorials to help you in classes, be sure to take advantage of these opportunities. The end of the 3rd quarter is Friday, April 4, 2008. As a reminder, counselors will be going into Social Studies classes during the week of March 3 - 7 to begin the registration process for next year's classes. As we begin this process, just know that changes can be made, and there is plenty of time to get questions answered. We will review course selections review student's progress towards graduation. If you have questions, feel free to call the counseling department. Also, SRJC summer session limits enrollment of high school students. If your child is interested in attending SRJC during the summer, Concurrent Enrollment Forms MUST be returned to your counselor by Thursday, April 17 !!!! Seniors: We will be administering the SRJC Placement Test on Thursday, March 13 from 2:15 - 5::30 in the Analy Library. Be sure to sign up in the Counseling Office. Space is limited to 60 people and we need to plan for students planning to test. This will include both the English and Math placement tests. Doyle Scholarships have been returned to SRJC. For students who were ineligible, but very close to the 2.5 gpa requirement, there is a second cycle for students who become eligible through their final semester grades. If you were not eligible in high school, you can become eligible once you attend SRJC. Also we will have an SRJC Information Night on Wednesday, March 19 from 7 - 8:30 pm in the Analy Library. This is a very helpful evening for students and parents wanting more information on SRJC and steps to prepare for the transition from high school to college. Finally, to seniors planning to attend 4-year colleges, keep in mind that ALL acceptances are provisional. Be sure to keep focused on your classes and grades. Colleges DO look at the final transcript to ensure you have completed your course of study in a satisfactory way. The Graduation Participation Policy requires students to be passing ALL required classes and to have acceptable attendance in courses. Check with your counselor if you have questions. Students and parents, poor attendance and grades can mean you won't walk in the graduation ceremony. Please be sure to be responsible to avoid any major disappointments. Juniors: The College Information Night is scheduled for Thursday, March 20 from 6:30 - 8:00 pm in the Analy Library. Please mark this on your calendar. Spring SAT test dates are rapidly approaching. Please see the "New and Noteworthy" on the counseling website for test dates and registration deadlines as well as other vital information. The spring College Fair held at SSU is scheduled for Tuesday, April 22 from 6 - 8 pm. Colleges from across the nation send representatives to answer questions for students as they embark on the college process. We highly recommend attending, if possible as it's a chance to meet reps from various campuses to talk about opportunities. We are having MOCK SAT test on Saturday, March 8. Sign ups are in the Career Center . Sophomores: Keep in mind, your grades for college admission are calculated during your 10th and 11th grades. Please do your best to keep your opportunities open. Also, as you know, the Good Driving Discount requires students to earn at least a 3.0 gpa. This is a substantial savings. Freshman: As we enter the spring, we hope that you have transitioned well to Analy High School-made new friends, developed relationships with your teachers, attended various sporting events and even joined teams as well as enjoyed theater and music productions...perhaps even joined a club or two! Our doors are open to help you plan for next year and help you in any way. Please sign up to see us. This goes for all students! ___________________________ 8th ANNUAL ANALY TIGERS GOLF CLASSIC Friday, May 9, 2008 Windsor Golf Club Field Limited to First 120 Golfers SCHEDULE Time Event 11:30 pm Check-in, Putting Contest, Pro Clinic 1:00 pm Shotgun Start - Team Scramble Format 6:30 pm No Host Cocktails, Awards, Auction 18 Holes of Golf w/ Shared Cart-Range Balls Tee Prizes -Snacks-Beverages-Dinner Team Prizes for Low Gross and Low Net (Blind Bogey) Teams Per Player _____ @ $130 each =$____________ Dinner Only _____ @ $35 each = $____________ TOTAL AMOUNT PAID $______________ Guarantee your tournament spot by enclosing payment now! Funds are raised in support of athletics, as well as teacher/classroom grants for instructional improvement, site improvement projects, technology, vocational education, the visual and performing arts, and Project Graduation. The Analy Booster Club is one of the few booster groups in the area to divide its funds between athletics and academic programs. Be part of the parent action at Analy High School so you can enjoy these years with your children. Join the Analy Booster Club and volunteer to help us reach our goals. 2008 BOOSTER CLUB ALLOCATIONS At the February meeting, the Analy Booster Club allocated over $44,000 toward funding 2008 Booster Allocation grants. This amount brings our thirteen-year total to almost $650,000 of contributions to Analy High School programs! This year's allocations funded 28 staff proposals in support of athletics, uniform funding for sports team, instructional/support services, library/media services, performing and visual arts, physical education, extra-curricular activities, Project Grad 2008, and site improvement projects. Over the years, the allocations have seen a fair 50/50 split between athletic and academics. In addition, the Analy Booster Club is proud to announce that this year's Membership Drive resulted in 71 donations by current members towards their student's programs of interest at Analy. The total amount contributed was $1,065 and went to various athletic teams, the band, choir, cheer, and drama programs. We thank our membership for designating a portion of their annual dues to programs that touch their children. Booster Meetings The Analy Booster Club Board meets on the first Monday of each month at 6pm in the Analy Library. You are welcome to join us. Future meetings are scheduled for: Mar. 3, Apr. 7, May 5, June 2. Booster Website Visit the Analy Booster website at www.analy.org and link to the Booster Club page to find out what is happening, download spirit apparel and membership forms, and learn more about our efforts to support programs at Analy High School. Membership It is never too late to join. Our goal is to have every family and Analy staff member join the Booster Club this year. 2008 membership forms are available on the Analy website (www.analyhighschool.org) or by contacting Diana Lowry (824-9591). A Booster membership is just a small way to show your support for our school. (Interesting Fact: If every Analy family joined the Booster Club this year, we would have had $26,000 more to allocate) Spirit Apparel Sales Show your school spirit by wearing Analy colors from a new line of spirit apparel. Spirit Apparel is available at online at the Analy HS websiteor by calling Charmaine Louzao (829-1008). Spirit Apparel makes great gifts for your Analy student or for your family! This year's apparel celebrates Analy High School's Centennial year. Maybe you know of Analy alumni who might want to once again wear our school's colors to the celebrations. Go Tigers! 8th Annual Analy Tigers Golf Classic Want to help the Analy Boosters raise some money and have a great time doing it? Then plan to participate with 135 golfers/diners at the 8th Annual Analy Tigers Golf Classic. The tournament and awards/auction dinner is scheduled for Friday, May 9, 2008 at Windsor Golf Club. For only $130, you can enjoy a day on the links and dinner at Charlie's Grill (dinner only is $35) with your Analy friends/business associates to help us raise funds for both Athletics and Booster Allocations. (We are also known for our great Tee Prize packages!) This is a great way to kick-off a week of celebrating 100 Years of Tiger Pride since the Analy Centennial Celebration is scheduled for May 17th @ Karlson Field. It is a thespians festival for high schools throughout California and beyond. 2700 students participate with monologues duos, one- acts, musical theatre, participate in workshops and watch other schools perform their work. We took 4 monologues and a one-act and came home with an award for Most Improved during the Festival won by Caitlyn Garlock. Congratulations Caitlyn and all the students that participated. On March 18th, in honor of Women's History Month, the 4th period Acting class will perform The Perfect 36 which is a stage reading written by Candace Corrigan and Jeanne Kahan about women's suffrage. The piece will be presented to classes during 4th period during school time and at 7:00 pm that evening, a suggested $5 donation at the door, no one will be turned away. We hope you will come join us in celebrating Women's History Month. This April Analy Arts presents the wonderful musical comedy Anything Goes, lyrics and music by Cole Porter. Anything Goes is a light hearted musical comedy taking place on the luxury ocean liner S.S. American. It is a story of unrequited love, mistaken identities, eventual rightly matched relationships with lots of singing and dancing. The original show opened in 1934 (when our show is set). The show was revised in 1962 (which is the version we are presenting) and then revised again in 1984 performed at the Beaumont Theatre in NY, which is why it is called the Beaumont Revival. There is a Hollywood movie version which really has next to nothing to do with the original show. Our Analy Band students will be under the direction of Robert Cullinen and the show is directed by Starr Hergenrather. The choreography this year is under the direction of Starr with many student choreographers. Our show dates are Apr. 11, 12, 17, 18, & 19 at 7:30 pm and two matinees, Apr. 13 & 19 at 2:00 pm. Ticket prices are $15.00 for reserved seating, $12.50 for General Seating, $8.00 for students and Seniors. Tickets will be available at People's Music and Copperfield's as well as Zone Music in Cotati after March 14th. We hope to see you at Anything Goes!!! ___________________________ Band and Orchestra News Reeds: Please check with your student, if they are reed players, and make sure they do not owe money on reeds. These bills will be turned into the office and will hold up report cards at the end of the year. Analy Band Wagon is a non-profit organization with the purpose of helping the band and Orchestra program. The group meets on the second Wednesday of the month. The next meeting is Mar. 12, 2008 at 7:00 PM . The Analy Band Wagon is a great way to become involved with the Analy Band. If you are interested in becoming part of the band wagon board please call Karen in the band office for more information. Honor Band Trip: The final payment will be due on March 17th. Please look in your email in the coming weeks for an itinerary of this event. ESCRIP: The ESCRIP program is a great way to help out the Analy Band and Orchestra program without spending more money. Log on to www.escripinc.com and fill out an application and enter your charge card numbers. Then when you shop at the stores listed a percentage automatically comes to the band program. Remember that the first $60 goes towards your class cost. We are currently close to having 100 families enrolled in the program. Recycle Your Printer Cartridges And Old Cell Phones: The Band and Orchestra program is still accepting toner cartridges as part of an ongoing fundraising program. We accept all cartridges. Also now being excepted "old cell phones". Bring them to Karen in the band room. Recycle and help raise money for the band and orchestra program. Dates: Be sure to mark you calendar! June 12 Graduation 6:30pm ___________________________ The Daily Commute Do you know that during a typical week Analy High School students and their parents drive almost 23,000 miles to get to and from campus! At an average of 20 miles per gallon, that amounts to over 1000 gallons of gasoline each week! And those gallons convert to over 5 tons of greenhouse gases! Just for Analy students in one week! This year, the Statistics class at Analy will once again work on reducing the impact of our commute during the months of April and May. The class keeps track of students who carpool, walk, ride their bike, or take the bus during this time period, and hands out prizes to those who do. The prizes are gift certificated from local businesses. At the end of the campaign, all participants will be eligible for a large raffle prize. If you own a local business, or work with someone who does, we need your help. The more prizes available, the more our students will carpool, or take alternate forms of transportation to get to school. Please ask these businesses to participate by offering to donate a gift certificate for an item in their store: bagels, cookies, ice cream, bike repair, free lunch, etc. And if you are interested in helping with this important project in any other way, please contact David Casey at dcasey@analy.org or at 824-2300 x2006. ___________________________ La Buena Nota Analy High School Newsletter The E. L. Department is busy as usual. We are currently studying Cesar Chavez and the fight for social justice for migrant farm workers. The Latino Lunch Club is meeting this week with a guest speaker, Jose Gashe, from Bank of America. He will speak to the students about careers in banking and finance. We have contacted the artist Dan Lopez to discuss a mural project. We have used our money carefully and are in the process of purchasing some new textbooks, computer software and classroom equipment. We are current revitalizing The Analy Azteca Club and are looking for ideas for fund-raising. So if you have any ideas please contact Caroline Bjorklund or Jesus Cruz at 824-2335. Does anyone know where we can get a good deal on custom T-shirts? We have several goals for the Azteca Club; one is to create a nice Cinco do Mayo lunchtime event and the other is to have booth at the Centennial Celebration on May 17th. At the last ELAC meeting, we set dates for the remaining meetings for this school year. ELAC meetings will be Feb. 21, March 20, April 24 & May 8th we look forward to seeing you there. ___________________________ Math Department News Tutoring Free math tutoring can be arranged through the Tutorial Center. Have your student stop by the library and visit the Tutorial Center to find out how they can get help. The math department has collected a list of students who will tutor for pay for nearly all math subjects. Have your student talk to his or her math teacher if you want to hire a student tutor. Santa Rosa JC has a list of tutors available for hire at http://online.santarosa.edu/presentation/page/?23318. Homework The Analy math department has a common homework policy: A student needs to earn 66% or higher on homework or the highest overall grade they can earn in a math class is a D. Homework provides practice, and practice is a big part of strengthening math skills. In addition, we often cover material in homework that we don't end up putting on a test or quiz. This policy is designed to motivate students to get into the habit of doing their homework and ultimately to do better on tests, quizzes, and their entire course. If you have questions about the policy, contact your student's math teacher. Calling for unused calculators If you have an unused scientific or graphing calculator laying around your house (perhaps in a room formerly inhabited by a current college student who used to attend Analy) we could put it to good use in the math department. Just drop any calculator that you no longer need by room 103 or have your current student give it to their math teacher. Thanks! Calling for unused Palm Pilots A new grading application we have site licensed here at Analy allows teachers to walk around a class and enter scores into a Palm-based grading program that syncs with their regular desktop grading program, greatly streamlining homework processing. If you have an old Palm that is laying around gathering dust that you'd be willing to donate to get someone else up and running, please contact Walt Hays at 824.2362 or whays@analy.org. The requirements are as follows: Palm OS 4.x or 5.x, 256+ colors, touch screen and stylus. The software, if you would like to read more about it is described at http://www.easygradepro.com/feature_handhelds.html. ___________________________ ANALY HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS CALENDAR March 2008 March 1 Track @ Big Cat Invitational TBA March 3 Grls V SB @ Clear Lake 3:30 March 4 Bys V Golf @ Windsor 3:30 Bys V Tennis @ HM vs Redwood 3:30 March 6 Bys V Golf @ HM vs. Casa 3:30 Bys V Tennis @ Windsor 3:30 Grls JV/V SB @ Rancho 3:30 Swimming @ St. Vincent 3:30 March 7 Bys V Baseball @ HM vs. Petaluma 3:30 Bys F/JV Baseball @ Petaluma 3:30 March 10 Grls V SB @ HM vs Elsie Allen 3:30 Bys F Baseball @ HM vs Rancho 4:00 March 11 Bys V Golf @ Petaluma 3:30 Bys F/JV Baseball @ Sonoma 4:00 Bys V Baseball @ HM vs Sonoma 4:00 Grls JV/V SB @ HM vs. Ukiah 3:30 Bys V Tennis @ HM vs Casa 3:30 March 12 Track @ El Molino 4:00 Grls. "iPods" on Campus Each year, personal listening devices with names like iPod, iRiver, MP3, cell phones, etc. become smaller and more expensive. In fact, the iPod "Nano," which retails at almost $300.00, is so small one could conceivably lose it in a pocket. Unfortunately, the small size of these devices make them easy to lose and equally easy to steal. Again, we want to emphasize that students should not bring these items to school. Ideally, we would like to see these devices remain safe at home. However, should your student be allowed to bring his or her device to school, please advise him or her of the following: ¥ Analy is not responsible for lost or stolen items. ¥ There is very little the school can do by way of recovering a lost or stolen item. ¥ Items like iPods are very easy to lose and can also be stolen very easily . Please speak try and discourage your students from bringing these items to school. If they must, please advise them of the above information. ___________________________ The SIP ZIP has a NEW NAME! Mark your calendars now and plan to attend the auction. There will be a Silent Auction from 6-8pm, dinner will be served from 6:30-7:30pm with live music for your entertainment, the Live Auction starts at 8pm and the Raffle will be at 9pm. Tickets for the event are $10 and are available at Analy High School and the door. All proceeds from this event will go to Bob Burke's Kids foundation. Bob Burke's Kids is a non-profit program that provides year-round activities and support for Sonoma County Families with children diagnosed with terminal or chronic illnesses. The program puts on barbecues, fishing trips, skating parties, bowling, and holiday parties for local families - all free of charge. Bob Burke's Kids does not have any salaried positions or paid employees, and for over twenty-seven years they have relied solely on donations for funding. Bob Burke's program provides a support network for families and children, and a chance to take a break from the diseases that consume so much of their lives. This program has helped over 500 families, a number that continues to grow. The proceeds from the last seven charity auctions organized by the Analy Student Leadership class have gone to help keep this program going, and we are happy to once again donate 100% of the proceeds from this year's event. If you are considering contributing an item or service to our auction, some items that have sold well in previous years' auctions have been gift baskets, food items, gift certificates, clothing, artwork, and jewelry. If you would like more information on donating, please call 707-824-2381 to reach Analy Student Leadership. You can also send an email to analyasb@yahoo.com.
