This is an advanced course in literature and composition,
with a focus on building the skills of critical analysis. Selections
include The Crucible, Hamlet, Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead,
The Great Gatsby, The Grapes of Wrath, The Things They Carried, Ceremony,
Ethan Frome, and other selections from the extended reading list. Short
fiction, poetry and non-fiction selections come from the anthology and
various other printed sources. Students work to develop and maintain
a personal style as they review and practice more traditional forms
of academic writing. Though the focus is on analytical and critical
writing, students will also write in a full range of expository modes.
A summer reading and writing assignment is required, and students are
encouraged to take the A.P. Language and Composition exam in the spring.
